Classic Boxers Inspire Custom BMW R nineT

The BMW R nineT is a captivating motorcycle with a rich family history. It pays tribute to its iconic boxer predecessors, with its air- and oil-cooled engine continuing the legacy. The MFix Workshop in Vietnam was tasked with adding a vintage BMW touch to the R nineT, while keeping the changes subtle and well-judged. The result is a stunning custom R nineT Scrambler with tasteful details.

To enhance the bike’s performance, MFix utilized plug-and-play parts that are readily available for the R nineT. They also fabricated several components in-house. Starting at the front, a custom-made headlight fairing houses an ultra-powerful Rigid Adapt XP Pro light. Made from aluminum, the fairing mimics the shape of the classic BMW R80G/S Paris Dakar’s fairing. The enduro-style front fender is from an R nineT Urban G/S.

Moving towards the handlebars, MFix installed vintage scrambler-style handlebars with CNC-machined risers from Unit Garage. The clutch and brake controls were upgraded to Magura and Brembo, respectively, with Oxford grips and BMW R1250GS hand guards added. The bike also features fork adjusters from an Andreani cartridge kit, a steering damper, and an upgraded rear shock from Öhlins.

The fuel tank and rider’s seat were retained, but received new covers. Unit Garage provided the side covers and the luggage rack, which replaced the pillion seat. The high-mounted rear fender and taillight assembly come from Wunderlich, with a handmade inner fender concealed below. Motogadget turn signals mounted on CNC-machined aluminum baseplates were added, along with a license plate bracket.

The distinctive silver air intake on the fuel tank was replaced with a modern unit from Pier City Custom, while a two-into-one air intake with a DNA filter was hidden behind the side covers. A Dynojet Power Commander tuning chip ensures optimal performance. The factory Akrapovič mufflers were kept, but the built-in baffles were removed, and a set of titanium headers was fabricated.

Additional improvements include SW-Motech foot pegs, an Evotech sump guard, and aftermarket cylinder head covers from the BMW accessories catalog. The tubeless wheels are from VMX, with Bridgestone Battlax AT41 tires fitted on them.

The livery of the custom R nineT Scrambler pays homage to the distinctive paint jobs of the BMW R90S models from the 1970s. MFix chose a blue color from later boxer models but applied the iconic ‘smoke’ effect made famous by the R90S.

This custom R nineT demonstrates the trend among builders to make subtle changes to modern classics rather than drastic modifications. MFix’s attention to detail and performance upgrades elevate the R nineT to another level. With its captivating design and superior performance, the MFix custom BMW R nineT is truly perfect.
